Excellent article. We are doing something very similar at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). Take a look at these two projects (1) Data Analysis Workbench (http://www.dawb.org) - an Eclipse/RCP workbench and workflow tool, and (2) EDNA (http://wiki.edna-site.org/index.php/EDNA) a Python based framework for wrapping analysis packages.
