A team at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia has developed a high-performance wall for visualizing and interacting with objects in three dimensions (3D).
Professor Isabel Navazo and researchers in the Modeling, Visualization, Interaction, and Virtual Reality Research Group initially developed the EsteroWall system for use as a teaching tool for inspecting anatomical models.
EsteroWall makes use of interaction systems for highly precise detection of users and their movements, and a touchscreen for interacting with projected objects. The virtual wall has a pointer with control buttons, and a virtual magic lantern, a tool that enables users to simultaneously visualize and inspect the inside and outside of an object in an interactive manner, allowing for greater analysis and examination of the object.
The virtual wall is comprised of a 132-inch high-resolution screen where images are projected, two projectors connected to a central computer, a reflection mirror, a rear projection screen, a positioning device, and circular polarization glasses for 3D viewing. The large-scale stereoscopic projection system is connected to the same PC with a high-performance graphic card, and the passive stereo system used with 3D glasses delivers high-quality images for groups of up to 15 people.
