Why Google's Made With Code Is Helping Women Get Into STEM For Earth Day

This year's "Made with Code" initiative, launched by Google in 2014 to celebrate Earth Day and inspire girls to learn to program, paired women from three non-government agencies with student scientists.

The women worked together to develop inventions designed to meet environmental challenges.

In an interview, University of Hawaii professor Ruth Gates and Harvard University student Augusta Uwamanzu-Nna discuss the need for more women to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers.

Uwamanzu-Nna says there are few women entering the biology-engineering field. "A good way to ensure that girls are aware of what [career opportunities are] out there and to ensure they can pursue STEM is to get them exposed to it before college," she says. "I think that also [it] is important to teach children that you don't have to do just one thing, that you can be passionate about many things," she says.
