The University of Illinois' Coordinated Science Laboratory is developing a noise-cancelling technique that does not require ear canal-blocking headphones, with researchers focusing on a behind-the-ear device.

The team says its concept entails integrating wireless Internet of Things (IoT) networks with noise cancellation.

The system relies on an IoT microphone positioned in the environment to detect sounds, transmitting them over wireless signals to an earpiece.

The University of Illinois' Romit Roy Choudhury explains, "Our ear device gets the sound information in advance, and has much more time to produce a better anti-noise signal."

The device outperformed a leading headphone in overall noise cancellation, and received higher ratings from human participants.
