Amazon, Google Poised for Race to Hire High-Tech Talent

Amazon and Google are respectively planning to recruit Microsoft C#- and Java-savvy engineers and Python users in a fierce competition for technology talent.

Amazon expects to bring more than 25,000 jobs to New York and another 25,000 to Northern Virginia, while Google aims to double its New York City workforce to more than 14,000 employees over the next decade. Burning Glass analysis of the companies' job listings over the past year determined Amazon's most-concentrated positions were for software development engineers, software-development managers, and solutions architects; Google's most in-demand workers were software development engineers, program managers, and marketing managers. Amazon's targeted software engineers must be experienced with object-oriented analysis and design, while Google desires Linux and JavaScript specialists.

BDO USA's Tom Stringer says the rivals' New York expansion implies more focus on accessing thousands of prospective employees than cultivating an urban tech industry that could be more valuable to startups.
