Harvard Medical School researchers have developed a robotic catheter that can autonomously navigate inside a beating heart.
The device uses a small camera and a light-emitting diode to successfully travel to the correct location.
The researchers used 2,000 images of the interior of a heart to train an algorithm to control the movement of the catheter, then tested the device in five pigs with leaky heart implants needing to be sealed.
In each operation, the researchers tested the navigational skills of the catheter multiple times. Out of 83 trials, the catheter successfully navigated to the right location 95% of the time.
