The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has been linked to quicker cyberattack discovery times in the European Union. EU organizations are discovering cyberattacks 70% faster now than they were last year, and researchers said the GDPR's emphasis on privacy protections has been a major factor in the improvement.
The median dwell time from the start of the intrusion to its discovery was 177 days last year, analysis by researchers at cybersecurity company FireEye shows, but that number has plummeted to 54 days now.
The GDPR requires that any organization that has uncovered a data breach report it to the relevant authorities within 72 hours. Failure to do this, or being found to be otherwise non-compliant with the legislation, could result in a significant financial penalty.
