Researchers at the University of Southern Denmark and UVD Robots have developed a robotic system that uses eight UV-C ultraviolet-light-emitting bulbs to destroy bacteria, viruses, and other harmful microbes by damaging their DNA and RNA so they cannot multiply.

The light is also hazardous to humans, so the robots must work in isolation; the process takes 10-20 minutes to complete.

If the proper dose of ultraviolet light is applied in the right period of time, most organisms will be eliminated, says researcher Hans Jørn Kolmos.
