Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Peking University in China have designed an optical device that emits light in one direction to make fiber communications more efficient.
The design aims to reduce energy loss caused by light leakage in optical fibers.
The researchers used a series of slanted bars, developed via a novel etching technique, to concurrently break left-right and up-down symmetries.
Said Michael Gerhold with the U.S. Army Research Office, "Not only do the coupling efficiency advances have potential to improve data communications for commercial data centers, but the results carry huge impact for photonic systems where much lower intensity signals can be used for the same precision computation, making battery-powered photonic computers possible.”
