Consumer rights groups say Companhia do Metropolitano de São Paulo (METRO), which operates the subway system in São Paulo, Brazil, has not shown that a new facial recognition technology platform protects user privacy.
The platform will feature 5,200 digital high-definition cameras that will scan the faces of 4 million passengers per day, and it will be integrated with the police database to help authorities locate wanted criminals.
The consumer groups allege that METRO has failed to demonstrate the security of the databases to be used to implement the new surveillance system.
Among other things, METRO has not developed data protection policies geared toward children and teenagers, or produced a financial impact study on data leaks.
There also are concerns about false positives that could result in discriminatory actions against passengers.
