Scientists at the U.K.'s University of Bath have captured 360-degree virtual reality (VR) video footage using a commercially available camera on a rotating selfie stick.
The OmniPhotos system replicates high-quality motion parallax, so foreground objects move faster than the background when the VR user moves their head.
OmniPhotos are based on image-based representation, with optical flow and scene adaptive geometry reconstruction customized for real time 360-degree VR rendering.
Bath's Christian Richardt said, "This opens up VR photography to a whole new set of applications, from estate agents' virtual tours of houses to immersive VR journeys at remote tourist destinations."
