The EU has released plans to strengthen its three-year-old voluntary code of practice on online disinformation.

Officials want to make the code more effective at combating false information on technology platforms by preventing digital advertising companies from profiting from "fake news."

The European Commission's Vera Jourova said, "We want to cut the systemic producers of disinformation off the money. Disinformation still is something that sells well, so we want to also engage the advertising industry not to place ads next to disinformation."

The plans call for information-sharing between digital platforms and ad companies on advertisements rejected for promoting false information; improved ad transparency; and banning people or groups that systematically spread disinformation.

Google, Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft, TikTok, and Mozilla are among the technology companies that already have signed on to the code of practice.
