Robocalls Are Out of Control. But That Could All Change Now

As of June 30, all major voice providers in the U.S., including AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Comcast, are required by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to implement the Stir/Shaken technology to minimize illegal robocalls.

The technology requires voice providers to verify the robocall's origin, ensuring the information on the Caller ID matches.

Stir (secure telephone identify revisited) is the technical protocol, while Shaken (signature-based handling of asserted information using tokens) is the framework used to track calls in the new robocall mitigation database.

FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr has said multiple technologies and policies will be necessary to address the issue of robocallers.

Carr said, "If it doesn't, then we've got to continue to innovate and find more technologies that are going to stop this, because certainly the bad actors that are out there have a profit motive to find a way around these systems."
