Findings from a newly developed computational assessment model for drug delivery through inhalers suggest that drugs should contain smaller particles to enable them to reach the distal bronchi. Focused on dry powder inhalers and pressurized, metered-dose inhalers, scientists from India and Australia employed computation fluid dynamics to investigate inhalation rates and drug particle sizes in a realistic human lung simulation.

The research "demonstrates how the understanding of fluid mechanics, and the power of computational fluid dynamics, can inform more effective design of drugs and drug-administering devices," says Suvash C. Saha in the School of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering at the University of Technology Sydney.
