United Parcel Service (UPS) announced an expansion of its deal with Google Cloud, which will involve greater network, storage, and computing capacity.
UPS will continue using Google's artificial intelligence and machine learning tools to analyze incoming data, which should spike with the rollout of various programs.
UPS' Juan Perez said one initiative, to attach radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags to packages, would supply more detailed data about package locations; as the program expands, "We have to get to a place where we can analyze this data much more rapidly," he explained.
The company's Harmonized Enterprise Analytics Tool will analyze RFID data and other information in the cloud to ascertain the most efficient package travel path, in parallel with its On-Road Integrated Optimization and Navigation system.
Google Cloud's Kirsten Kliphouse said the expansion's timing is right, partly because UPS is generating more data points, and because of the need for deeper analysis.
