Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) engineers have formulated a method to control the spins of atomic nuclei as quantum bits (qubits) using two different-colored laser beams.

The process matches the difference in frequency of an incoming laser beam with the nuclear spin's transition frequencies, causing a specific flip in the nuclear spin.

The researchers said the process is tunable, allowing, for example, one laser to match the frequencies of current telecom systems to transform the nuclear spins into quantum repeaters for long-distance quantum communication.

Said MIT's Paola Cappellaro, "This novel coupling mechanism enables [nuclear spin] control and measurement, which now makes using nuclear spins as qubits a much more promising endeavor."
